Jewellery and metalsmithing

The Jewellery Collection includes more than 2,200 pieces by more than 130 artists, and their collection began in 1946. The oldest pieces are folkloric jewellery from the 19th century. The core of the collection is jewellery between the 1950s and 1980s, which reflects the changes and innovations in the local and historical contexts. You can also get a good overview of more recent jewellery, the work of the younger generation, which exhibits a freer use of materials, as well as technical and aesthetic approaches. Since the 1960s, jewellery has been one of the most interesting areas in Estonian applied art. The new ideas in various eras have been expressed quickly and flexibly, while preserving their connection to tradition. In addition to unique pieces of jewellery, the museum also has a unique collection of product samples and artists’ mass produced pieces from the ESSR Art Products Factory ARS. The museum acquired these in 1976, 1981 and 1997.
