Design collection
The Design Collection is the most recent of the museum’s collections and was established in 1999 as a separate collection to those that focused on unique applied art with the aim of systematically compiling the heritage and information concerning Estonian design. The collection consists largely of pieces pertaining to product design from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day, from Luther furniture to the Stigo electric scooter. This also includes the museum’s collection of unique furniture, which has been growing since the 1950s. The texts and visual material supporting the collection is also invaluable, a large part of which is stored in the archives. In terms of historical material, the collection focuses its activities largely on the extensive legacy of the Soviet period, the compilation of which has been ongoing, albeit at a temporal distance. The collection is also systematically growing with examples of contemporary design in the form of objects as well as ideas, and work has begun to incorporate materials pertaining to graphic design. The collection includes just over 1,200 pieces.
