Exhibitons 2005

02.06 – 09.10. BOOKMARK - an exhibition introducing leather art primarily from the
collection of ETDM.
After a long time, the visitor gets a chance to take a more profound look at the history of leatherwork in Estonia. The exhibition “Bookmark” can be seen in two halls on the second floor.
Nearly anybody has heard something of the legendary Eduard Taska and his workshop. But who and where of the Estonians or Estonian residents - before Taska, besides Taska, and after him up to the present day - have been taking an interest in developing Estonian leatherwork, what they have created and stored at the museum.
The Lion’s share of the items come certainly from the ETDM’s own collection. There should also be on display the items that have not become a museum’s acquisition, but nevertheless deserve it. What is different today than in the days gone by, what have the changes spared and what have they taught to see in a new way – all this is what the “Bookmark” is trying to mark.

02.06 – 02.10. SCRIPTA MANENT III – international exhibition of book binding "The Best Thing in the World"
"Scripta manent" (“what has been written, will remain”) is an international exhibition of book binding art taking place in Tallinn every fifth year. This year’s exhibition is already the third time for this event.
Although, customarily, some classic or some work by a well-known contemporary author has been selected for binding, then in this case the contents of the corpus of texts include fairytales and poems written by 7-15 year-old Estonian children. On the one hand, children’s work is genuine and immediate, and, on the other, sensitive and receptive to the noise and opinions of the society. As such, the total work offers us simultaneously a cordial as well as a marked picture of the life in contemporary Estonia.
For the purpose of this exhibition, there have been printed 300 numbered sets of broadsheets. The title of the fairytale book is “The Best Thing in the World”.

08.10. – 13.11. PLASTIC INTO BAG!
A selection of the production of Tartu Experimental Factory of Plastic Goods in the 1980s.
In the Soviet time, many practical items had a higher status in comparison with today – as typical of the era of trade deficit, the availability and assortment of even the most ordinary consumer goods was limited. One of such valuables became plastic bag, which often served as an accessory rather than a practical carrying device.
In Estonia the production of promotional plastic bags began at the Tartu Experimental Factory of Plastic Goods at the end of the 1960s already, but an explosive growth in the bag production occurred prior to the Olympic games in Moscow (1980), when the Committee of Olympic Games promised to confer a bonus to the best enterprises with good souvenir ideas.
The exhibition allows peeking into one decade of the Soviet society – the exposed plastic bags reflect both the daily life of the people as well as the values of the society.
The exhibition is compiled by Estonian National Museum.

29.10 – 15.01.2006 AN ARCHIVE
During its 25 years of existence, the Estonian Museum of Applied Art and Design has succeeded to initiate, compile, and organise nearly 190 exhibitions considering it one of its main activities.
During the second half of the year 2005, it is possible to view a retrospective summary of these years and these exhibitions by means of photos of displays and exhibited items.

25.11 – 29.01.2006 TARMO LUISK. Solo exhibition.
Tarmo Luisk is probably the best-known name on the scene of contemporary Estonian design. Above anything else he is associated with lamp design. Indeed, it is his favourite field, but designing furniture has been equally important for him.
Luisk graduated Estonian Academy of Arts in 1996 and already the next year his first and until today very successful set of lamps “Basic” was born.
As appropriate for good design, a compromise of simplicity and cleverness is characteristic of the Luisk’s works. At the exhibition at the Estonian Museum of Applied Art and Design, Luisk, being an aspiring creative person, does his best to present a combination of what has already been done and new prototypes.
